In Irish, as in any language, one of the first questions you are likely to be asked when you meet someone is:
Cárb as duit?
Where are you from?
When responding, we say:
Is as mé
I am from
For example:
Is as Gaillimh mé
I am from Galway
This may take some getting used to if you have not seen this formula before. We invite you to introduce yourself below to your fellow learners. Tell them where you are from and ask them where they are from. Here is a simple example:
Dia duit, is mise Seosamh. Is as Glas Naíon i mBaile Átha Cliath mé. Cárb as duitse?
Hello, my name is Seosamh. I am from Glasnevin in Dublin. Where are you from?
