Fáilte chuig Irish 102

Fáilte chuig Irish 102/Welcome to Irish 102, the second course in a series of courses that we in DCU are running as an introduction to Irish language and culture.

You are most welcome and we are thrilled that you can join us. This course is a direct successor to Irish 101. It is not required that you have completed Irish 101 to undertake Irish 102. However, we do recommend that you consider completing Irish 101 to ensure that you have the basics which will help you proceed more effectively with Irish 102.

This course is a four-week journey (of four hours per week), which will help you build upon the themes introduced in Irish 101. During this run of the course, the content for each week will be made available week by week. This approach aims to allow learners to immerse themselves in the topics for each week as they unfold. We hope this will be of help to you and we will review this approach at the end of this run. Over the next four weeks we will delve deeper into sentence construction, certain aspects of grammar, vocabulary, and Irish culture. The themes of this course are as follows:

  • We will revise and reflect on introductions and greetings, explore Gaelic script, a short history of Irish print media, take a look at some important factors in sentence construction and learn how to talk about the weather, a perennial topic of interest in Ireland.
  • Next week, we will learn about the seasons of the year and the calendar, take a look at the legend of Fionn Mac Cumhaill, as well as examining the importance of festivals, such as, St Patrick’s Day in Irish culture.
  • In Week 3, we will learn all about colours, shades and hues, as well as how to describe something. We’ll also look at clothes, arts and crafts, including the storied Book of Kells.
  • In Week 4, we will be learning about numbers, the clock and time, as well as a topic close to many people’s hearts - food and drink.

Helping you along this journey will be our course instructors and our friendly robots Oscar and Niamh. Some of you will recognise them from Irish 101 and we hope you find them helpful. We encourage you to ask them questions and they will aim to answer these over the course of the week.

Before you begin we recommend that you read the information regarding the main Irish dialects and pronunciation given at the bottom of this page. We hope this will help you become aware of the existence of different dialects and the role that dialects play in Irish language learning as well as our course pedagogy.
